Candidates Lim and Atienza had a debate last April 22, 2010 at the Polo Club Mayoral Debate spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Manila. Various social issues were tackled by the competing candidates during the debate. When the discussion went to the issue of drugs, Lim noted his accomplishments against drug trade and use during his tenure as the city mayor. However, Lim’s opponent, Lito Atienza doubted his authenticity due to the fact that Lim’s son was arrested for drug pushing.

It could be recalled that the son of Lim, Manuel Lim was apprehended in 2008 for selling illicit drugs, a nonbailable offense that also carries life imprisonment. Manila mayor Alfredo Lim conceded that his son was arrested by authorities, but claimed that he did not, in anyway, helped his son with his case. In order to divert the issue, Lim pointed the accusation of drug use towards Ali Atienza, the son of his
opponent and a national and international taekwondo competitor. Ali Atienza who was in the audience cried foul and called Lim a liar, saying that how can a national athlete, who competes in international games with strict drug testing procedures, be a drug addict?

Embarassed with his accusation, Lim tried to come out clean by saying that it was former vice mayor Lacuna who said that Ali was a drug addict. Ali then went on the stage and lectured Alfredo Lim about his track record as a national athlete.Lim, at that moment, humiliatingly yield to the fumes of the young Atienza, as the moderators of the debate took control of the situation. Lito Atienza remained calm despite the events and managed to continue the debate.

Manila mayor Alfredo Lim tried his best to redeem himself from the humiliating accusation he dropped; however, the program ended with antagonism in the air. As
hard as he might have tried though, Lim have already left an impression toward the thinking crowd of professional Rotarians. With his mediocre means of campaigning, Lim usually pleases the city’s usual crowd but he must have considered that what he was facing during that time were professional individuals who can be critical about his actions. It is just disheartening to see how this form of unintelligent debate can take place. As the upcoming leaders of the city, the public expects more from these candidates than the senseless words coming from their mouths.

Ali Atienza will not easily let go of Lim’s allegations, stating that he would be filing a libel case against the mayor. The son of Lito Atienza noted that it pained him, as a former athlete, to be accused of being a drug addict. The young Atienza also pointed out that it was really impossible for an athlete to compete if he has been found using illicit drugs, making Lim’s accusations a look more like
fabricated story. He also added that he will push the charges even after the election.

With election 2010 almost near, it has been a normal practice for competing candidates to speak ill against each other. This practice has been around for ages, and has since served as a means to drag their competitors down. However, it should be realized that as public leaders, this practice clearly sends out the message to the voters that what candidates are capable of doing just to be in the position. For the record, the public is now tired of drama, what is important is to walk the talk, and not just to talk and talk.

The city’s healthcare services and public hospitals were also enhanced under his leadership.Atienza added more funds for the city’s public hospitals and health centers which allowed them to purchase new medical equipment and medicines for enhanced healthcare services and to be able to provide free medicines to the city’s impoverished residents. Atienza has also brought free medical services and medicines to far-flung
areas and barangays.

Manila under Atienza’s leadership has had the best peace and order situation in many years. In support of Manila’s budding athletes and promising talents, Atienza launched sports-culminating activities and provided free training and development programs to harness their skills and talents.In addition, Atienza has launched programs for the free access to education and school supplies of Manila’s public school students. When Lito Atienza mentioned that he would leave the Cabinet in order to run for Manila Mayor in the upcoming elections, voters were certainly gifted with a great choice for the leader of the city. Lito Atienza is certainly a staple in Philippine politics and is gifted with a formidable family background. A lot of his kin are in themselves prominent members of the history of Philippine politics. With this, it could be rightfully said that Lito is truly the best choice for the post of Manila Mayor.

The father of Lito Atienza, Jose Atienza Sr, or Pepe was the top leader of the Department of Public Services. He was a distinguished public servant who would even get up in the middle of the night just to help troubled neighbors. His uncle, Herminigildo Atienza, was appointed Manila Mayor himself right after the liberation of the city. He was a great
mayor who was deemed as one of the biggest influences in the founding of the legendary Liberal Party of Philippine politics.

Lito Atienza had a childhood among the ruins of the city of manila, walked through the neighborhoods that was but a patchwork of debris and even swam on the waters of Manila Bay. He would be the perfect Manila Mayor because he grew up in the city in which he dreams to lead. He dreamt that he would eventually join Philippine politics, elevate the city of Manila into a greatness which will make the ashes of the war a mere afterthought. By running for Manila mayor, he can now engage in his dream task of trying to place Manila back to the pedestal where it belongs.

Lito Atienza certainly has all the requisites to become Manila Mayor. He finished his primary and secondary education in Ateneo de Manila University and completed a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from
the University of Santo Tomas. Even though their family was wealthy, they were hardworking which enabled Lito to enter into formidable schools. The Atienza family were also very religious and devoted to God. These family values and religious aspects are certainly very important for the position of public servant in Philippine politics.

But perhaps the best qualification of Lito Atienza is his clean and respected name. His father Pepe firmly set foot that no wealth could ever be at par with the value of a good name backed up with a good education. Lito also had lots of peers and always persevered in order to reach his goals. He engaged in manual labor jobs and rode free along classmates with cars without shame because he firmly believed in hard work as the bridge to our goals.

Lito Atienza would for sure extend his colored history in his participation in Philippine politics by running for mayor. By all accounts, being the Manila Mayor would
be best for him and for the city of Manila given his heritage with the place. He played out not only his life here, but also lived shared his experiences with his family in the city which he envisions to prosper. If he wins, it will truly be for everyone’s benefit if we give him a chance to fulfill his dreams of the city for us.

There are many reasons why Lito Atienza should be the next Mayor of Manila. First, he comes from a distinguished family in Philippine politics. Second, he is very thrifty and hardworking which enabled him to finish from distinguished schools despite his lack of resources.
